Parent Coach vs. Parenting Coach: Why the Difference Matters More Than You Think
If you've ever searched for support as a parent, you've probably come across both of these terms.
Parenting coach. Parent coach. They sound almost the same. Most people assume they are the same.
They're not. And once you understand the difference, a lot of things about why certain strategies haven't worked for you might start to make sense.
The Difference, In Plain Terms
A parenting coach focuses primarily on your child. The behaviors, the strategies, the techniques. What to do when your kid melts down. Won't listen. Tests every boundary you set.
A parent coach focuses on you. Your patterns. Your triggers. The stuff that gets quietly activated when things get hard at home.
Because here's what I've come to understand, after years of doing this work: Most parenting struggles aren't really about the child.
They're about what comes up in us.
Why This Distinction Matters
If you've tried all the strategies and nothing's sticking, it might not be a technique problem. I hear this constantly from the parents I work with. They've read the books. Watched the videos. Tried the scripts word for word. And still, something isn't clicking.
When your own patterns and triggers are running the show, the strategies fall flat. Not because they're wrong. But because there's something deeper that needs tending to first.
How I Work: Parents First, Always
I'm a parent coach and a Positive Discipline parent educator. And the way I work is a little different from what most people expect.
In my work, parents come first. Always.
Not because the strategies don't matter. They do. But here's what I know to be true: you are already the best expert on your child. You know them. You love them. You show up for them every single day, even on the hard ones.
What gets in the way isn't a lack of information.
So we don't start with a script or a technique. We start by getting curious about what's coming up for you. Your reactions. Your fears. The expectations you carry, for yourself as a parent and for your child. The values that quietly shape how you move through your days.
Then we bring in the education. The tools, the strategies, the developmental lens, so you can actually use them the way they were intended.
Because when you're grounded in yourself first, everything lands differently.
The Shift That Changes Everything
Parents first. Always. Because when you shift, everything around you shifts too.
If this is landing for you, and you're realizing that what you've been missing isn't another strategy, I'd love to talk.
